The Weight of Silence
In May 2021, twenty-one people were arrested in Ho while attending a training on human rights. Many of them were young. Some were learning how to support others who face discrimination. They spent weeks in detention before the case was eventually dropped.
A year later, the effects of that arrest still linger. Some of those young people still carry the fear. Some families still carry the shame. And many ordinary Ghanaians still believe that gathering to discuss dignity is itself a suspicious act.
When the state treats peaceful learning as a threat, it teaches the public that certain lives are less worthy of protection. The result is not order. It is quiet fear that spreads into homes, workplaces, and friendships.
We must ask ourselves: what kind of society do we build when young people become afraid to learn about their own rights?
